Palmstaff Residence,
Ivanhoe

Located in the heart of Ivanhoe, this landscape channels the spirit of Palm Springs through a contemporary reinterpretation that enhances the strong architectural presence of a mid-century modern home. The design draws on the clean lines, bold planting and relaxed elegance of desert modernism to create a series of refined outdoor spaces for family living, entertaining and quiet retreat.

Generous zones for play and social gathering unfold seamlessly from the interior, supported by a low-maintenance material and planting palette that provides a calm backdrop for sculptural accents. The main pedestrian entry has been reconfigured to create a spacious grassy lawn, framed by resilient groundcovers and a series of retained mature palms that anchor the garden in place.

A private internal garden wall introduces a sense of enclosure while allowing for a feature breeze block element that celebrates the home’s architectural heritage. Carefully positioned sandstone boulders and raised planters provide texture and rhythm, referencing the rugged beauty of Palm Springs desert landscapes and enhancing the garden’s visual depth.

Throughout the site, clusters of iconic palms including Washingtonia filifera and Phoenix dactylifera rise from a restrained ground plane, creating contrast and vertical drama. The result is a landscape that balances clarity and character, offering a timeless connection between architecture, planting and place.
