King’s Outlook,
Ivanhoe East

This project reimagines a backyard into a refined and low-maintenance garden sanctuary that prioritises privacy and subtle elegance. Employing a light-touch design approach, the landscape creates adaptable outdoor zones tailored to the evolving needs of a growing family, allowing the space to naturally develop over time.

The design emphasises enduring materials and spatial clarity, establishing a timeless environment that requires minimal upkeep. A linear arrangement of carefully selected trees and screening plants enhances visual privacy between neighbouring properties while maintaining a refined aesthetic. Species are chosen for their upright growth, minimal leaf and flower drop, and low pruning requirements, striking a perfect balance between effective screening and ease of long-term care.

To preserve expansive views from the balcony, the hedge is maintained at a controlled height, ensuring openness while providing seclusion. The seasonal courtyard features a compacted gravel base that complements existing stone pavers, creating a durable and permeable surface that unifies the site’s materiality.

The adaptable layout accommodates a summer trampoline and transforms into a cosy fire pit area during cooler months, supporting year-round family use. Thoughtfully positioned to offer a calm, uncluttered outlook from the adjacent study and theatre room, the existing pool shed is retained to maintain visual balance and spatial harmony within the garden retreat.
